feature of one's email client

Then go the right of the page and choose Email Notification
from Security Central. This sends notifications of security updates before
these reach Windows Update. If you subscribe to this, check that the
security issue in the mailing does indeed cover your Windows set-up and
Windows programs that you have installed and use.

so merely previewing the email will infect a computer

If you are running Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5.5 and
have not installed the above patch, it is highly recommended
that you do so now. IE 6 already has the patch included.
Remember to always keep your anti-virus
programs fully up-to-date and to frequently check for new updates and
definitions. It's recommended to do this at least once a week, and daily
during periods when it's known that a particularly bad virus is doing the
rounds.
